What type of editing do I offer? Developmental (substantive) editing. Not sure what I mean by that? A developmental edit is an in-depth evaluation of your manuscript with attention to story structure, plot, turning points, conflict, characterization, and pacing. I do not offer line editing or copy editing.
What do you get if I edit your manuscript? I provide an editorial letter that is usually 5-12 pages. I also email your manuscript with comments in track changes. Once you've read through all comments, we can either address your questions via email or phone call, as you prefer.
Do I use a written contract? Yes. A written contract clarifies expectation on both sides and protects both parties in regard to delivery dates, payments, methods of communication, and more.
What do I charge? My fees are in keeping with Editors Canada and the Editorial Freelancers Association.
What are my qualifications? I have provided developmental edits for contemporary romance, historical romance, science fiction, epic fantasy, grimdark fantasy, women's fiction, and young adult manuscripts. I've taught courses at the University of Toronto School of Continuing Studies for a decade, mentored writers through University of Toronto and The Writers Union of Canada, been the e-Writer in Residence for the Toronto Public Library, and taught writing courses at conferences large and small throughout North America. I have been on jury panels for the Saskatchewan Book Awards and the Ontario Arts Council. My own work has received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, and Quill and Quire, and I have won and been shortlisted for numerous awards.
